What needs cleaning?

01What gets cleaned

Seawater, charge air and oil duties foul the same vessel in three different ways

Marine heat exchanger cleaning has a constraint that shoreside work does not: the vessel sails. A cooler that is losing duty has to be dealt with inside a port call, a lay-by berth or a docking. The method that fits an eighteen-hour turnaround is not the method that fits three weeks in dock. What is possible is decided by the window, the deposit and whether a spare pack or bundle is on board.

01

Central and box coolers take the seawater side, and the seawater side grows things

Plate central coolers on a seawater duty foul biologically as well as chemically. Larvae settle in the ports and in the low-velocity lanes of the plate pack, then grow, and the pressure drop climbs long before the approach temperature tells you anything is wrong. Box coolers in the sea chest are worse again, because the growth is on the outside of the tube nest where nothing circulates. Titanium plates tolerate the chemistry that shifts it; the gaskets and the frame studs often do not, which is what limits how aggressive a clean can be.

Fouls with
Barnacle and mussel spat, algae, biofilm, silt and sand
First symptom
Rising differential pressure, freshwater side running hot
Watch for
Chloride pitting on stainless plates, gasket swelling, anode wastage
02

Charge air coolers foul on both sides at once and lose power on the air side

The air side of a scavenge or charge air cooler collects three things: oil mist from the turbocharger, soot, and salt drawn in through the intake. They combine into a film that water alone will not remove. The water side scales and fouls like any other seawater or jacket water duty. A blocked air side shows up as rising scavenge air temperature and falling engine output, and it is usually the deposit that is asked about last and costs most.

Fouls with
Oil mist, soot, salt crystals; scale on the water side
First symptom
Scavenge air temperature up, pressure drop across the cooler up
Watch for
Fin damage, blocked drains, oil carry-over from the turbocharger
03

Lube oil and jacket water coolers foul from inside the machinery, not from the sea

Lube oil coolers accumulate oxidised oil, sludge and varnish on the oil side while the cooling side fouls conventionally. Fuel oil heaters carbonise. Jacket water coolers scale where the treatment has drifted or the make-up is wrong. These are the units where the deposit tells you something is wrong upstream, and cleaning them without dealing with the source lasts a few months at best.

Fouls with
Oxidised oil, sludge, varnish, carbon; scale on the water side
First symptom
Oil outlet temperature drifting up, cooler running full
Watch for
Oil in the cooling water, which is a cross-leak and not a fouling problem

02What has built up

Marine growth, oil and salt are removed by three different chemistries

The seawater side and the oil side of the same machinery space need opposite treatments, and using one on the other is how gaskets and tube coatings get written off.

DepositWhere it comes fromHow it is removed
Marine growthBarnacle and mussel spat settling in plate ports, tube nests and sea chests, then growing in place.Mechanical removal first, then acid circulation for the shell base. Growth is scraped, not dissolved.
Mechanical + CIP
Biofilm and slimeSeawater and untreated cooling circuits. Thin, and disproportionately insulating for its thickness.Alkaline or oxidising circulation, then a dosing regime or it returns within the voyage.
CIP
Salt and scaleSeawater evaporating on hot surfaces, and calcium carbonate on jacket water duties where treatment has drifted.Inhibited acid circulation, matched to the plate material instead of to the deposit alone.
CIP
Oil mist and sootTurbocharger carry-over and intake air, laid down together on charge air cooler fin blocks.Alkaline degreasing and immersion. The fin block is cleaned from the outlet side back.

The port call decides the method more than the deposit does

Ashore, the deposit chooses the method. On a vessel the window chooses it first, and the deposit decides what can be achieved inside that window.

  1. 01

Circulating alongside suits a cooler that has a standby to carry the duty

The offline unit is circulated through the ship's own connections. No entry, no lifting, nothing leaves the vessel, and cargo work carries on. This is most of what gets done in a short port call, and it is limited to deposits that dissolve.

  2. 02

Opening the pack on deck is the only alongside route that shows plate condition

The pack is broken and the plates cleaned and inspected individually on deck or on the quay. It needs space and a real window, and it is what turns a suspected cross-leak into a known one.

  3. 03

Landing the pack to a workshop fits a docking or a lay-by berth

The pack or bundle goes ashore, is cleaned, inspected, gasketed and pressure tested, and comes back with a record. It needs either a spare or an accepted period running on standby.

  4. 04

Box coolers and sea chests are drydock work almost by definition

Growth on the outside of a tube nest is only properly reached out of the water. Planning those into the docking specification costs less than finding them at survey with the dock booked.

04What happens next

Four steps take a fouled unit from enquiry to a tested return

The enquiry goes straight to a contractor who cleans that unit type. There is no qualifying call in between.

  1. You send the unit details, the deposit and the postcode.

  2. The enquiry goes to a specialist set up for that unit type and that fouling.

  3. They come back with method, timescale and price.

  4. The clean is carried out in place or off site, and the unit is tested before it goes back.

05Questions

Class survey, port windows and plate material decide how a marine clean is planned

Can a heat exchanger be cleaned while the vessel is alongside?

Usually yes, where the cooler can be isolated against a standby unit and the deposit is one that circulation will shift. A central cooler on a duty-standby pair is the straightforward case: the offline unit is circulated, rinsed and returned while the vessel works cargo.

It stops being possible where there is no standby, where the deposit is marine growth, not scale, or where the window is shorter than the circulation needs to be. Growth in particular does not dissolve on a useful timescale. It has to be physically removed.

How is marine growth removed from a box cooler or sea chest?

Mechanically, and generally out of the water. Barnacle and mussel shell is a structure and not a deposit, and no circulation removes it at a rate that fits a port call. Scraping, brushing and jetting take the bulk off, and acid circulation afterwards deals with the calcareous base left on the tube surface.

That makes box cooler and sea chest cleaning drydock work in most cases. Where a diving contractor can work the sea chest in port, the growth can be reduced, but the tube nest itself is not properly reached in the water.

Do titanium plates change how the unit is cleaned?

They widen what the plates themselves tolerate and they do not change what the rest of the unit tolerates. Titanium handles seawater and aggressive acid cleaning that would pit stainless, so it is specified for seawater duty in the first place.

The limits move to the gaskets, the frame, the studs and the connected pipework. A chemistry chosen for the plate material alone can destroy a gasket set, so the clean is specified for the whole assembly.

Will the clean satisfy class survey requirements?

Cleaning is not itself a class matter, but the condition it reveals often is. A stripped pack that shows thinning, pitting or cracking generates findings, and coolers opened for survey have to be presented in a state the surveyor can assess.

What a clean should produce is the record: what was found, what was replaced, what was tested and to what pressure. Where the work is being done to support a survey, say so in the enquiry, because it changes what has to be documented and when.

How long does a charge air cooler clean take?

An in-place chemical clean on the air side is typically a matter of hours and can be done between port calls where the engine can be taken off load. It restores some duty and it does not reach a heavily loaded fin block.

Removing the cooler and immersing it is the thorough version and takes days rather than hours, because the cooler has to come out, soak, be rinsed, dried, tested and refitted. On a vessel with no spare that means planning it into a docking.

Can the work be done on passage, not in port?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on redundancy. Where there is a standby cooler and the crew can isolate it, a circulation clean on passage is routine and is the least disruptive way to do it.

Riding crew work of this kind needs the vessel's agreement, the permits, and confined space arrangements where machinery space entry is involved. It also needs somewhere to put the spent cleaning solution, which cannot go over the side.

What does a marine heat exchanger clean cost?

The same three things decide it as anywhere else, unit, deposit and access, but access carries far more weight at sea. A central cooler circulated alongside with ship's connections is one price. The same cooler landed, stripped, cleaned, gasketed, tested and returned is a different one entirely.

Port, window and whether a spare exists are what move the number most, so the enquiry asks for the port and the timescale instead of just the unit.

How often should marine coolers be cleaned?

By measurement, not by calendar. Differential pressure across the cooler and the temperature difference across it are the two figures worth trending, and both are usually already being logged.

In practice seawater duties foul far faster than shoreside equivalents, and vessels trading in warm, shallow or estuarine waters foul fastest of all. Trading pattern predicts fouling rate better than running hours do.
