01The unit

Fin blocks foul from the air side and the damage is often mechanical rather than chemical

Air-cooled heat exchanger cleaning is mostly about direction. A fin block collects debris on the face the air enters, packed progressively deeper into the pack, and washing it the way the air went drives that debris further in, not out. Cleaning from the outlet side back is the whole technique, and getting it wrong turns a surface problem into a permanent one.

Debris packs into the fin field from the inlet face and has to come back out the same way

Dust, pollen, seed, insects and leaf litter are drawn into the fin pack by the fans and lodge between the fins, progressively blocking the free area. Because it entered from the inlet face, the only way to remove it without driving it deeper is to wash from the outlet side back through the pack. On an induced draught unit that means working from below or behind; on forced draught, the opposite. Getting the direction wrong compacts the debris into the middle of the block where nothing will reach it.

Oil mist and salt bind the dust into a film that water alone will not lift

On compressor and engine service, oil mist from seals and breathers coats the fin surface and turns loose dust into an adherent film. Coastal and offshore sites add salt, which is hygroscopic and holds moisture against the fin and the tube. Either one changes the job from rinsing to degreasing: an alkaline cleaner with dwell time, applied at low pressure, then rinsed through. Water alone on an oil-bound fin block moves the surface and leaves the film.

Fin damage costs airflow permanently, so pressure is the thing to get right

Aluminium fin is thin and bends easily, and a flattened fin field blocks airflow just as effectively as dirt does. With the difference that it does not wash off. High pressure washing is the common cause. The work is done at controlled pressure with a fan-pattern nozzle held square to the face, and where fins are already bent they are combed straight. On a badly flattened block, combing recovers more duty than cleaning does.

Direction, pressure and season decide how a fin block is cleaned

Why does it matter which side you wash from?

Because the debris got in from one side. It entered on the inlet face and packed progressively into the block, so washing from that same side drives it deeper into a place nothing can reach.

Washing from the outlet side back pushes it out the way it came in. It sounds like a detail and it is the single biggest determinant of whether a fin block clean works. On a unit that has been washed the wrong way for years, the middle of the pack may be permanently blocked.

Can high pressure be used on a fin block?

Not the pressures used on tube bundles, no. Aluminium fin is thin and folds at surprisingly low pressure, and once a fin field is flattened it restricts airflow permanently. The damage does not wash off and cannot be undone except by combing.

Controlled pressure with a fan nozzle held square to the face is the technique. If the fins are being pushed over, the pressure is too high or the nozzle is too close, and the cleaning is now doing more harm than the dirt was.

Our unit only struggles in summer. Is it fouled?

Very likely, and summer is when a fouled air cooler shows itself. Air-cooled duty depends on the temperature difference between process and ambient, so at 12 degrees a partially blocked block still makes duty and at 30 it does not.

Cleaning is before the season instead of during it. A unit that is marginal at design ambient is one warm week away from limiting production, and that is the worst moment to be arranging access.

What is fin combing and is it worth doing?

Combing draws a toothed tool through the fin field to straighten fins that have been bent flat by impact, hail or over-pressure washing. It is slow and it is manual.

On a block with significant flattening it is worth more than the cleaning. A bent fin field blocks airflow exactly as a dirty one does, so a spotlessly clean but flattened block still will not make duty. Where both are present, the assessment should cover both.

How often should air coolers be cleaned?

Site conditions decide it, not hours run. Coastal, dusty and vegetated sites can need seasonal attention; a clean indoor installation may go years.

The practical trigger is process outlet temperature at a known ambient, compared against commissioning. That normalises out the weather and shows the fouling trend directly, which a raw temperature reading does not.

What does air cooler cleaning cost?

Face area and access, mostly. Ground-level dry coolers are straightforward; elevated fin fans on a pipe rack need access equipment, and that frequently exceeds the cleaning cost.

Whether degreasing is needed also moves it. An oil-bound block needs chemistry, dwell time and a second pass, which is a materially different job from rinsing dust off.
