01What is there

Three quite different industrial bases sharing one region

Heat exchanger cleaning on Merseyside covers a wider spread of duty than most UK clusters. Stanlow is an operating refinery with a conventional turnaround rhythm. 02What gets cleaned

Refinery, chemical and hygienic duty need three different trades on the same map

This is the cluster where getting the contractor matched to the duty matters most, because the three bases here have almost nothing technical in common.

Refinery bundles come out at turnaround and need decontamination first

Preheat trains, overhead condensers and reboilers on an operating refinery follow the same rhythm as anywhere: scope agreed months ahead, decontamination ahead of opening, bundles pulled and jetted in a bay, inspection while clean. Bundle count drives the programme.

Chlor-alkali and speciality chemical duty puts the material ahead of the deposit

Halogen acid service means graphite block exchangers and exotic alloys, and those tolerate acids that would destroy stainless while being mechanically fragile and intolerant of thermal shock. Compatibility is established first; a chemistry selected on the deposit alone has written off equipment with long lead times.

Food and brewing plant is cleaned to a hygiene standard, not a duty target

Pasteuriser packs, wort coolers and product plate exchangers are cleaned in place daily by the site itself, and a specialist is called when that has stopped working. The deliverable includes food-grade gaskets, integrity testing and verification and not recovered heat transfer.

Utility and cooling water duty is common to all three and behaves the same everywhere

Cooling water exchangers, chillers and steam condensers across the region foul with scale, biofilm and silt regardless of what the site makes, and in-place circulation with corrected water treatment is the normal answer.

Duty type, material compatibility and hygiene standards decide how Merseyside work is planned

Is Stanlow still operating?

Yes. It trades as EET Fuels, having changed its name from Essar Oil UK in January 2024, and it remains one of the UK's operating refineries supplying a substantial share of road transport fuels.

It is also running a large decarbonisation programme, including hydrogen production units intended to feed the HyNet pipeline, which adds new plant to the site alongside the existing refining duty.

How are graphite block exchangers cleaned?

Carefully, and rarely with high pressure. Graphite tolerates hydrochloric and sulphuric service that would destroy stainless, so it is specified, but it is brittle and its cement joints are vulnerable to pressure and to thermal shock.

Chemical circulation at controlled temperature is the normal route, with mechanical cleaning limited to low pressure rodding within the manufacturer's limits. Heating and cooling rates matter as much as the chemistry.

Can the same contractor do our brewery and our chemical plant?

Sometimes, but asking is instead of assuming. Hygienic product-contact work needs food-grade materials, verification sampling and documentation practices that industrial cleaning does not, and industrial hydrocarbon work needs decontamination and containment capabilities that a hygiene specialist will not have.

The enquiry is routed on the duty rather than on the postcode for exactly this reason. Being specific about what the unit does is more useful than being specific about where it is.

What does the HyNet build-out mean for exchanger work?

New plant with new duties, and hydrogen service brings its own materials considerations. Commissioning cleaning on new equipment is also a real category. Construction debris, mill scale and jointing compound have to come out before a system is run.

It does not change how existing plant is cleaned. The refinery, chemical and food bases continue on their own cycles alongside the construction.

How quickly can a breakdown be attended?

Merseyside has a dense industrial services base and good road access, so response for a unit that is down is generally hours to a day, subject to site induction and permit requirements.

On food and drink sites the constraint is usually production scheduling, not travel. The line has to stop before anyone can touch the exchanger, and that is arranged around the production plan.

Is work planned around shutdowns here?

On the refinery and the chemical corridor, yes, and turnaround scope is settled months ahead.
